Description
Traditionally, the training provided to law enforcement supervisors and managers has been aimed at their heads – filled with theories and ideas. The basis for most of the training has been around the technical aspects of the job such as report writing and developing policy and procedural knowledge. Skills training is usually reserved for the safety aspects of the job such as self-defense and firearms training. While these are obviously legitimate areas for focus, the training often does not take into account the fact that law enforcement supervisors/managers spend much (if not most) of their time interacting with people – both in the community as well as in their workplace. Put simply, most law enforcement supervisors/ managers are not trained to get supervisees to do what is needed and expected of them without a hassle.
This training program aims to change that orientation. Based on the careful study of work done by trainers and researchers in the field of criminal justice, the skills necessary for successfully interacting and communicating with people have been identified and can be taught using the methods outlined in this book. The accompanying DVD brings these skills to life and provides you with the model and opportunity to see the skills in action and consider how you can use them in your work setting.
