Managers often receive training on “how to get the job done,” but not necessarily how to get along with people effectively.  More important, they haven’t been trained in how to get supervisees to comply with requests (especially requests that the supervisee may not like or agree with) or deal with conflict (which is bound to arise at some point in time).  This book presents skills – no “shoulds” or “oughts” – but practical, applicable skills that are immediately useful.  It is not designed to take issue with the fundamental management skills you have or will learn in your formalized training or that you receive from the mentoring of more experienced supervisors or officers.  It is designed to compliment both of those.  It will add to your current skills so that when you choose to use them, they will be there for you.


This book is divided into three sections:  The Basics are pre-management skills that give you information that helps you decide what action  to take in a given situation; the Add-ons are communication skills that will help you encourage the supervisee to explore and share information with you; and the Applications are skills that help you control behavior in a respectful way so that you can get what you want done with maximum compliance and minimal hassles.
