The Social Intelligence Model

The 4 day class utilizes the full TELL-SHOW-DO-FEEDBACK method for training social and emotional intelligence skills. Instructors TELL the attendees about a concept, then SHOW the concept through a series of demonstrations of both the right and wrong ways to implement a concept. Then it’s the trainees’ turns as they break into groups where they DO (or practice) the concept in a structured, safe, and supportive environment under the watchful guidance of a SoTelligence® coach. Each group member has the opportunity to receive, as well as give, useful FEEDBACK that will enhance his or her skills. Here’s an outline of what to expect
Day 1
Attendees learn
- about the different types of intelligences, including intellectual, physical, social, and emotional;
- what skills and technical abilities are and how they are obtained;
- what “variance” is and how it effects your ability to manage your interactions with others;
- how to operationalize concepts (such as empathy, respect, caring, and trust);
- the different components of non-verbal communication; and
- an introduction to the Basic Skills which are designed to help you assess, or “size up,” a situation. Trainees will learn about, see, and practice the building block skills of
- arranging the environment to enhance communication,
- positioning yourself so that you can get the most information through your senses (e.g., vision, hearing), and
- posturing yourself to communicate that you are fully attending to the other person(s) with whom you are interacting.
Day 2
On Day 2, attendees continue to build onto the skills they learned on Day 1. Attendees will learn about, see, and practice the building block skills of arranging, positioning, and posturing plus
- observing. During this section of the training, attendees learn how easy it is for our senses to become overloaded such that we may not accurately or completely take in all of the information that is available to our senses. The group is introduced to and practices the components of observation
- accurately observing behavior, appearance, and environment, and
- making accurate inferences about relationships, energy levels, and feelings.
- listening. During this section of the training, attendees learn how to listen to another person(s) by
- suspending his/her judgment,
- identifying the speaker’s key words and phrases,
- accurately determining the mood of the speaker, and
- identifying the intensity level of the speaker.
Day 3
The third day of training introduces the “Add-on Skills.” These skills build on the Basic Skills of arranging, positioning, posturing, observing, and listening. The Add-on Skills introduce the attendee to the art and science of communicating with others. Attendees learn
- how the brain processes emotions, and how this influences their ability to communicate effectively;
- what an emotional vocabulary is and how it can help the trainee to manage themselves and others;
- how to respond to others through the use of “sentence maps” that can be adapted to each attendee’s interaction style. Attendees will learn how to respond to
- the content of what the other person is saying,
- the feeling being experienced and expressed by the other person, and
- the meaning of what the other person is saying.
- how to ask questions using the 5WH method (who, what, when, where, why, and how).
Day 4
The final day of training continues to build on all of the skills learned during the previous 3 days and introduces the Application Skills which help the attendee manage the behaviors of others. Attendees learn and practice
- how to handle requests, both appropriate and inappropriate;
- how to make requests of others and improve your chances of compliance;
- how to reinforce desired behaviors in others while setting appropriate consequences for undesired behaviors.
