Description

In today’s correctional environment, supervisors and administrators realize the challenges involved in running a safe and effective environment for both the inmates and the correctional staff. They recognize the officer’s roles in rehabilitation while also being aware of factors such as the ratio between the officer and the inmates, the close physical proximity of the officer to the inmates, the increasing mental illness in the inmate population as well as the logistical and administrative skills required by the institution. Correctional training programs often do not include any “skills” training that focuses on influencing the relationships and communications between supervisors, administrators, officers and inmates. Instead, they focus on security or custody skills – and most correctional officers concede that they learn their “real” skills from the experienced officers they work around as well as by trial-and-error.

As the correctional supervisor or manager, YOU have the opportunity to ensure that the behaviors of your staff – and, consequently, your inmate population – reflect skills that can lead to de-escalation of conflict, increases in request compliance, and more effective social and emotional management of the work environment. The skills taught in this revised and extended manual are an extension of those taught in IPC: Interpersonal Communication Skills for Correctional Management, based on the work of Dr. Robert R. Carkhuff.
